Is there any difference between a false positive and a
    false negative in IDS?

Yes, both are completely different things. The false-
positive signifies a false alarm, whereas, a false negative signifies
    a complicated state.
When the alarm is fired by IDS for “Legitimate Network Activity”, it
is referred to as false positive. When the IDS is unable to
investigate the “Malicious Network Traffic”, it is referred to as false
    negative.
